39. Waving Fiddler Crab (Uca perplexa)



Subject: In a Balinese mangrove swamp a male Fiddler Crab (Uca perplexa) is waving his enormous claw (Propodus) to impress and attract a female. Only the males of these semi-terrestrial crabs possess a giant claw.


Technique: To synchronize the movement of the crab’s claw with the music we removed the video frames of the crab’s inactivity in between movements. Later we added a repeat effect to enhance the motion of the claw.
